Leonoff Stops 39
ITHACA, N.Y. ? The Yale women's ice hockey team came up just short in its bid for a major upset Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink, as a power-play goal in the third period gave No. 2 Cornell a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore goaltender Jaimie Leonoff took the hard-luck loss in goal, making 39 saves. Freshman forward Jamie Haddad and freshman defenseman Kate Martini scored for Yale.
Haddad's unassisted goal at 4:50 of the first came on a power play, just five seconds after a tripping call on Cornell and following a faceoff win by Cornell in the Big Red zone. Leonoff made 14 saves that period, and Yale's lead remained intact until early in the second.
Cornell (4-1-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) struck quickly to take a 2-1 lead early in the second with goals just 19 seconds apart from forwards Brianne Jenner and Jessica Campbell. But a 5-on-3 enabled the Bulldogs to tie the game midway through the period, as Martini scored her first collegiate goal on a one-timer off assists by junior defenseman Tara Tomimoto and freshman forward Janelle Ferrara. That capped a four-point weekend for Martini, who had three assists in Yale's 3-0 win at Colgate Friday.
Yale (1-3-0, 1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) stayed out of the penalty box until the 19:27 mark of the second period. While the Bulldogs were able to kill off that first penalty -- extending their streak of successful penalty kills to eight -- Cornell broke through after a tripping call early in the third. Forward Jillian Saulnier's tally at 4:36 proved to be the game-winner, as Cornell goalie Lauren Slebodnick finished with eight saves for the win.
Yale returns home for its first game of 2012-13 at Ingalls Rink next weekend, hosting Dartmouth Friday night.
