As a CFL coach, Trestman led the Montreal Alouettes to two Grey Cup victories and was named the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year.
Early Wednesday morning, the Chicago Bears made it official that Marc Trestman would be the team's new head coach, marking the beginning of a very new era of football for the team.
Trestman, 57, is the eighth coach of the last 40 years for the Bears and is one of only two coaches during that span to not have defensive coordinator experience. The only other coach was Mike Ditka, a former NFL tight end who certainly valued defense during his time as coach.
Instead, Trestman brings the Bears something they've never had before: a coach with a wealth of experience as an offensive-minded coach. He also represents an experiment for the NFL, as there isn't a past example of a CFL hire among the coaching ranks currently. It certainly isn't as if Trestman is without NFL experience, though. In fact, the majority of his coaching career came as an assistant in the league.
After a collegiate career at quarterback with the University of Minnesota and Minnesota State University Moorhead, Trestman spent two training camps as a defensive back with the Vikings before turning his focus to coaching. By 1983, he was the quarterbacks coach for the Miami Hurricanes, where he coached Bernie Kosar to a season that culminated with a national championship.
Coaching quarterbacks is what Trestman continued to do with eight different NFL teams between 1987 and 2004, also serving as the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals and Oakland Raiders.
He didn't take over the reigns as head coach of a team until the Montreal Alouettes offered him the role in 2007. He certainly found success, as he led the team to two Grey Cup victories and was named the 2009 CFL Coach of the Year. So much success that the Indianapolis Colts interviewed Trestman for their head coaching vacancy in 2012 before electing to hire Chuck Pagano.
The Bears fired Lovie Smith from the head coaching position after a 10-6 season that wasn't enough to earn a playoff berth. The team finished No. 28 in total offensive yardage and has had just one team finish in the upper half of the league offensively since 2000.
