New figures released by the Minister for Home Affairs show a dramatic fall in the number of cases dealt with by Jersey?s Youth Court in 2012.
Home Affairs Minister, Senator Ian Le Marquand, said: ?The major reduction of all figures in relation to youth crime continued throughout 2012.? The reduction in the number of cases presented to the Youth Court in 2012 was particularly striking.

?I was surprised by the 2011 figure, and am very pleasantly surprised by the 2012 figure.? It could be unlikely that that figure will be maintained, but any figure, in my view, below 150 represents remarkable progress, and I?d like to thank everyone involved in helping to achieve this.?
The comparable figures for the numbers aged under 18 in the Young Offenders Institution at the Prison and in Greenfields Remand Centre in relation to criminal charges and for the number of offences committed by under 18s are also available:

Senator Le Marquand added: ?All of these figures show a very welcome down turn in the levels of youth crime. There has been a significant shift in the recent pattern of levels of youth crime, and this continues to be a very good news story.
?I cannot tell precisely what has caused this, although my department is currently working on this. On behalf of the Children?s Policy Group, of which I am a member, along with the Minister for Health and Social Services, and the Minister for Education, it is pleasing and encouraging to see such results.
?There has been an increasing emphasis over the last decade in early intervention strategies, such as the Crime and Community Safety Strategy and Substance Misuse Strategy, and similarly, since 2003, the amount and standards of work with young people, including young offenders, have greatly improved through the work of agencies, which include:-
(a)? The Education Service (PSHE);
(b)? The Children?s Service;
(c)? The Youth Service;
(d)? The Probation Service;
(e)? The children?s homes;
(f)?? The States of Jersey Police;
(g)? The Honorary Police;
(h)? The Community Support Team;
(i)??? Specialists working in secondary schools;
(j)??? Building a Safer Society, including
(1)? Prison! Me! No Way!!
(2)? Football with the Community and School Sport Development Team
(3)? Outreach Workers
(k)?? The motocross project;
(l)??? Greenfields;
(m) The Young Offenders Institution.
