Police ID man who killed self on TV after chase

PHOENIX (AP) ? A man who stole a car at gunpoint, shot at Phoenix police officers and then led them on a chase that ended with his suicide broadcast on national television was identified Saturday as a wanted felon with a long criminal history.

Jodon F. Romero, 33, was wanted for violating his parole for a weapons conviction and had numerous other violent crimes in his background, police spokesman Sgt. Tommy Thompson said.

At the end of an hour-long pursuit on an interstate west of Phoenix Friday, Romero pulled into the desert and an officer shot at him, although it appears he missed, Thompson said. Romero then walked off the dirt road, put a gun to his head and killed himself.

Fox News was covering the chase that began about midday Friday using a live helicopter shot from Phoenix affiliate KSAZ-TV. Anchor Shepard Smith told viewers that the video was supposed to be on a delay so it could be cut off if something went awry.

"We really messed up, and we're all very sorry," Smith said minutes after the suicide aired. Fox apologized for showing the violence on air. KSAZ itself was not airing the chase.

On Saturday, Thompson said police did everything in their power to de-escalate the situation, but Romero seemed intent on continuing a crime spree that began with a minor incident where he apparently hit a passing car with his hand, leading to a call to police.

As officers were heading to the south Phoenix area, they learned that a Dodge Caliber sedan had just been stolen at gunpoint from a nearby restaurant parking lot.

They spotted the car and gave chase, but pulled back when Romero running red lights and endangering the public, Thompson said. Instead, unmarked cars and a police helicopter began following him at a distance.

Romero drove into an industrial area and spotted two marked police units, with one officer standing beside one car talking with another officer. He veered into their lane and opened fire, missing the officers but hitting one patrol car.

He then got onto Interstate 10, heading west toward California at speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The police helicopter and unmarked police vehicles followed at a distance, and the Fox helicopter began its coverage.

Romero fired at the police helicopter during the chase, but didn't hit it, Thompson said.

About 75 miles west of Phoenix he got off the interstate and drove off into the surrounding desert.

He eventually stopped, got out of the car and began walking down a dirt road. That's when an officer fired one shot at him.

Although Thompson said it appear the shot missed, television footage shows Romero stumbling and falling down and appearing to feel his torso before waking into some brush.

That's when he shot himself in the head.

An autopsy will determine if he was actually shot by an officer as well.

Thompson said it was clear to officers they had to stop Romero from getting back to a populated area.

"Anybody who will shoot at police officers, that shows a total disregard for them, will shoot at anybody else," he said. "And this needed to be put to an end. Even after we backed out all the marked units he still continued to go."

Arizona Department of Corrections records show Romero was imprisoned from April 2010 to June 2012 for a felony weapons charge.

Looking For A Little Online Marketing Help? Try These Tips | Eric - First

It is a great feeling to run a successful online business with unlimited profit potential while having the freedom to work whenever you want. Internet promotion helps you do that, and here are some effective methods to assist your business in making more money.

Increase your credibility and that of your business by offering major, reputable companies the opportunity to advertise on your website. Being associated with these companies increases your own credibility tenfold. This also serves to increase traffic and makes the site more appealing to visitors.

Do not go over budget when paying for advertising. You don?t want to waste money on something that is of no benefit to your business. The wise investor knows what he is paying for, and what is being paid for is worth the money. This is one thing that makes banners a strong marketing investment.

TIP! A FAQ (frequently asked questions) section on your website is a convenience that your customers will appreciate. Your customers will be able to find answers quickly to questions.

Before you set out to get your website ranked, you should concentrate on building a quality site. This should be the first step for everyone in web business. If you start with a well-functioning, visually appealing site, you?ll have a solid foundation that will require less effort to upgrade later.

Offer promotions and incentives to encourage people to come to your website. Put one of your e-books on sale for a dollar for one or two days. The people that flock to your site for their free ebook will likely take a look at anything else you are selling. It is not unusual for such visitors to purchase other things that you have for sale on your website in addition to the e-book.

You need to have an engaging website set up in conjunction with your ongoing Internet promotion campaign. You can experiment with different layouts and color combinations to see which gives you the best results. Keep that in mind when you are building your site.

TIP! Offer an electronic freebie that is branded with your business and your website, and submit it to other sites that offer and list that particular item for free. For example, offer a free e-book and then submit it to different directories for e-books.

It is imperative that you learn proper usage of HTML tags. These tags are used to indicate key content on the page and makes it appear bold. Tags also tell search engine spiders what your site is about. Be sure to emphasize the important keywords.

?Fast? is a very powerful word in marketing. Time is sometimes given more priority as opposed to saving money, it is then important to make sure that you let customers know you do things in a quick manner.

Do not use spam. While it may seem efficient to post a bunch of comments on sites, those posts won?t have the positive effect you desire. And actually your impersonal touch will probably turn people off and make them feel irritated instead of interested.

TIP! Don?t give up on projects that don?t seem to work when you first try them. Your idea that failed to catch on in the past, may work now.

Secure the system you use to accept payments. You should offer a secure payment method like Paypal so users will feel comfortable making transactions. In addition, you should require customers to set up a password-protected account prior to providing you with their personal data and payment information.

Use a succinct caption and an accurate description for all the images on your website. Search engines always look at the text surrounding a picture to see if the image is relevant to what the person is searching for. Giving all of your images appropriate, descriptive captions can make a noticeable difference in your search engine results page standing.

Keep careful tabs on the information you give to your customers when using internet marketing to promote your small business. You need to make your articles high quality and different. Keeping your information fresh and updated is extremely helpful for visitors to your website.

TIP! Build a dictionary of terms to seem more professional. This will be very helpful for your customers and yourself.

You can get great marketing results from an Ezine that is designed to forge closer ties with subscribers. You can show your personality by adding photos of you along with your family and staff. In addition, write some fun memories about your employees or family. When you use a title that sparks their interest, they will be more likely to click!

Pay attention to your competitors. Their strategies may help you refine your own, allowing you to better reach your customer base. If you see yourself as a potential customer for their products, then they are doing something right. You should find a way to incorporate these ideas into your strategy.

TIP! Keep statistics that are highly-detailed. This could be sales, refunds, referrals, conversion, or anything else you can measure.

It is essential to know your target audience when you are trying to grow your Internet business. Selling sports items to someone who is interested in Star Wars is not going to make you much money. It just becomes easier to sell a product or service you are passionate about, as opposed to anything else. So market accordingly unless you?re a baseball card and old Star Wars toy retailer; then by all means go for it!

Title your products as ?limited? in advertising. Many people turn to online retailers because they feel local stores have nothing new or fresh to offer. Customers require items that are unique and different. Customers will feel that ?limited edition? products are special, and will be more likely to buy them.

Affiliate marketing should produce further marketing campaigns. It does sound unorthodox, but the idea is such that you want to create a pattern of customers finding your business, purchasing something and repeating the cycle.

TIP! Create a signature to put at the bottom of each e-mail you send, whether it?s for a personal or business message. Your e-mails are like your business cards on the internet.

You may start with a small company, but it?s your responsibility to keep working at it until you get to the level of success you want. Don?t stop when you initials goals are satisfied, come up with new goals and continue to grow and improve. Continue to learn new techniques until you go even beyond your goals. Best of luck to you in your business ventures

Payroll and Timekeeping Clerk Occupation outlook and information

Filed in Payroll on September 27, 2012 with no comments

Payroll and Timekeeping Clerks

Nature of Work

Payroll and timekeeping clerks compile and maintain data relating to employee time and payroll. One of their main functions is to ensure that employees are accurately paid and paid on time. ?More basic information on Payroll from wikipedia.

Training, Qualifications and Advancement

There is no special training for payroll or timekeeping clerks as they usually learn and are trained on the jog. ?Employers would however, prefer to employ candidates who have at least completed high school and who exhibit good computer skills.

Payroll Certification and Study Guides ? ?Payroll Professional (CPP) and Fundamental Payroll Certification (FPC).

Employment Opportunities

As of 2008, about 208,700 people were employed as payroll clerks. That figure is however expected to drop by 5% to 197,000 in 2008.

This expected reduction is attributed to rise in the use of payroll computer software that allows employers and employees to automatically record and update their own payroll and timekeeping data. Employment opportunities for payroll clerks are expected to continue to slowly decline as more and more businesses start using such software.

However, Payroll Service Bureaus are a fast growning business in this sector.

Job Prospects for payroll clerks

Despite the fact that the total number of jobs is expected to decline, favorable job opportunities still exist. This is because of expected job replacement opportunities that are expected every year as payroll clerks transfer to other fields. Clerks who have been able to attain a little more education or who have undergone certification programs that enable them to handle relatively more complex payroll matters definitely have an advantage and better job prospects.

Earnings

As of May 2008, the average wages earned by payroll and timekeeping clerks annually was $24,810.

More information on current wage and salary data can be gotten from the Occupational Employment Statistics Program under the occupational profile for payroll clerks.

With Goodell at table, NFL ref talks heat up

With Commissioner Roger Goodell at the table, the NFL and referees' union pressed toward a settlement Wednesday to end a three-month lockout that triggered a wave of frustration and anger over replacement officials and threatened to disrupt the rest of the season.

Two days after a controversial call cost the Green Bay Packers a win, both sides were said to be nearing a deal and several reports put regular officials back at work perhaps as early as Sunday.

ESPN reported that "an agreement in principle is at hand." The New York Times said the sides "were closing in" on a new agreement.

The NFL declined to confirm that a tentative contract was imminent.

The union wanted improved salaries, retirement benefits and other logistical issues for the mostly part-time referees. The NFL has proposed a pension freeze and a higher 401(k) match.

"Until somebody tells me differently, it's not really changed," Arizona coach Ken Whisenhunt said.

Talks resumed Wednesday morning and continued at league headquarters in New York past 11 p.m., EDT. The sides also held a marathon session Tuesday with Goodell present. He also attended four meetings last week.

"We want to go back to work but it has to be the right deal for 121 guys," NFL field judge Boris Cheek said. "We have to be patient and let this work itself out."

Some coaches, including Miami's Joe Philbin and Cincinnati's Marvin Lewis, instructed players not to speak publicly on the issue, especially after a barrage of comments that accompanied Monday night's Green Bay-Seattle game, which the Packers lost 14-12 on a missed call.

Fines against two coaches for incidents involving the replacements were handed out Wednesday.

New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick was docked $50,000 for trying to grab an official's arm Sunday to ask for an explanation of a call after his team lost at Baltimore Sunday. And Washington assistant Kyle Shanahan was tagged for $25,000 for what the league called "abuse of officials" in the Redskins' loss to Cincinnati on Sunday. Two other coaches, Denver's John Fox and assistant Jack Del Rio, were fined Monday for incidents involving the replacements.

"I accept the discipline and I apologize for the incident," Belichick said.

But many players indicated the replacement-ref issues were too significant to ignore.

"Would you let a Toyota dealership work on your brand new Rolls-Royce? That doesn't work right, does it," Dallas safety Gerald Sensabaugh said. "Our brand is so big, it's so important to a lot of people. There's no way you can have guys that don't have experience at that level."

The replacement officials previously worked mostly in lower-division college ranks, such as Division III, and in minor professional organizations like the Arena League.

"I hate to say it," Carolina's Steve Smith said, "but if you are going to have these refs in a Super Bowl it's going to cost somebody a game.

"I'll probably get in trouble for this, but you have to have competent people," he said. "And if you're incompetent, get them out of there."

Rams quarterback Sam Bradford didn't mince words about the regular refs ? "We need them back."

"I hope it happens soon," he said. "I just don't think it's fair to the fans, I don't think it's fair to us as players to go out there and have to deal with that week in and week out. I really hope that they're as close as they say they are."

Despite several field fiascos ? like Dallas' Kevin Ogletree getting tripped in the end zone by an official's thrown cap ? not everyone is necessarily pointing fingers at the replacements.

"Maybe we shouldn't be blaming the refs, but blaming the league, the owners, I don't know who it is," Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "Maybe it's not just the officials. We're putting them in tough situations and it can't be easy."

Even Cheek, the NFL field judge, said the replacement refs are in a difficult position ? though he noted the end-of-game call in Seattle, at least in his in eyes, should have been easy to get right.

"It's like expecting a high schooler to keep pace with Ray Lewis," Vikings punter Chris Kluwe said. "It's not fair to expect them to do that. I think you saw that through no real fault or lack of effort, they were just put in a position where they couldn't really succeed."

Even if a deal is at hand, it was still uncertain how it would affect the weekend's games. Week 4 opens Thursday night with the Cleveland Browns at the Ravens.

Titans coach Mike Munchak said he thought it might take a while before things return to normal, even with the regular refs.

"It's going to be hard for officials to come back since not doing a game since last December, a lot of them, and all of a sudden they're doing a game. I think it's going to be a tough transition either way. You want things to get settled. You want the best people to be out there, the guys who've been doing it a lot of years."

Bills coach Chan Gailey had a simple solution for all the recent angst.

"The biggest thing, if you get a big enough lead, it won't come down to a call," he said. "Go get big leads and it won't be an issue."

Only The Best Of Home Improvement Ideaswith me - Mudanza urgente

Consumers can get quite frustrated with home improvement. The wrong contractor, poor planning and insufficient knowledge and preparation can cause that disappointment. This article will provide you with advice to ensure your home improvements are completed without a hitch. Continue reading to learn more information.

Rarely you may find water leaking underneath the sink or possibly from the faucet, but do not try to repair the leak on your own. Put a large container under the leak to catch the water and call a plumber.

When painting your home, whether just a wall or your entire home, first you have to know how much paint is needed. If you just guess how much is required, you may end up buying too much or too little. Take your time, and do calculations the right way.

Choosing the right lights for each room usually makes a huge difference. Well lit rooms feel cozy and comfortable for all those in residence. Installing a second light fixture can also serve to brighten a room. Adding light to a previously dark space can improve the entire house.

You will save a ton of money by living in your house while you complete home improvements, so try to stick to one room at a time. Doing this will allow you to live in your home, unless you only have one bathroom and you need to work on it! Consider staying with friends if that situation occurs.

Only if you know that you will remain in your house for a long time should you buy fitted furniture. While this kind of furniture can look great and allow for a lot of storage space, it?s pricey and you can?t take it along if you move.

Most homes do not have natural lighting in the basement. Be sure to have an artificial lighting layout plan so your basement is livable. If you happen to be one of the lucky few, your basement walls will be slightly higher than the normal ground level. If that is the case, you should be able to put in windows to bring in natural light.

Notify your neighbors if you plan to be making home improvements that require street use. You might have to block the road or keep a dumpster in the yard or on the street. If you let your neighbors know about this, they will appreciate your consideration and won?t mind the inconvenience so much.

If increasing the overall value of the home is what you are trying to do through home improvement projects, contact a contractor to gain some inspiration. The contractors know what improvments will increase the most value.

Consider meeting with a professional when thinking about home improvements. They can help you design your home the way you want it. If you don?t want to do your home renovation alone, consider hiring a professional.

If you are unhappy with the work that your contractor has done, do not hesitate to speak up. Tell the contractor that he?s breached the contract first. If you don?t resolve the problem with a phone call, send a letter by registered mail. After that you should go to a local office that protects consumers.

If you plan your project well you will get your home improvement investment back in increased home value. Whenever you decide to sell, you are going to be happy you did this project because your house will stand out from the pack.

Obama: time "not unlimited" to resolve Iran nuke

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling the U.N. General Assembly that he wants to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy but that the time to do that is not unlimited.

Obama says that time after time, Iran has failed to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful and has failed to meet its obligations to the United Nations. He also says the Iranian government has been propping up the dictatorship in Syria and supporting terrorist groups abroad.

The president says, quote, "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."

This is Obama's final international address before the November elections.

"Gangnam Style" hit doubles value of Psy's father's stock

SEOUL (Reuters) - A pop star whose song "Gangnam Style" became the first Korean hit to top Apple's music download charts has also worked his magic on his father's software firm, helping it double in value since singer and dancer Psy burst onto the global scene in July.

Psy's father, Park Won-ho, is the chairman and controlling shareholder of South Korean semiconductor company D I Corp and its market capitalization has surged to 113.5 billion won ($101.29 million) on the main Seoul bourse, making it as of Tuesday the 459th most valuable stock measured by size.

Psy's "Gangnam Style", which mocks the rampant consumerism of a rich Seoul suburb, went viral on video-sharing website Youtube. The video has been viewed more than 267 million times on Youtube since it was released in mid-July.

"The positive sentiment from 'Gangnam Style' has attracted investors just because of the fact that the company is owned by Psy's father and uncle," said Lee Sun-tae, a researcher at NH Investment and Securities, who added Psy is not a shareholder in the company.

"The popularity will slowly dissolve in time, naturally."

South Korea's legion of retail investors, mainly middle-aged people, tend to jump on speculative stocks.

Software millionaire Ahn Cheol-soo, who this month announced he would run for the country's presidency, saw the value of his company Ahnlab Inc.'s shares slide after his bid.

Ahnlab stock was down 30 percent on Tuesday compared with its closing level a week ago, just a day before he made his announcement.

Bernanke wants you to buy stocks, but risk is high

By BERNARD CONDON, Associated Press

Ben Bernanke hopes his latest plan to stimulate the economy will get you to buy stocks and other risky assets. Maybe you should. People who did that after two similar Federal Reserve efforts are sitting on big gains today.

But the odds of fat profits aren't looking as good this time, and seem to be getting worse.

Stocks rose sharply before the Fed chairman announced his plans Sept. 13 instead of falling, as they did before the two previous efforts, suggesting less room for gains now.

Meanwhile, the world economy is slowing and Wall Street analysts are cutting estimates for future corporate profits. They expect them to fall this quarter from a year earlier, the first drop since just after the Great Recession ended 3? years ago.

"The market seems like it's climbing on central bank intervention rather than fundamentals," says Gary Flam, chief stock manager at Bel Air Investment Advisors. "I'm not a buyer right now."

The outlook for other risky assets like high-yield bonds is darkening, too.

The highly indebted companies that issue these bonds, popularly known as junk bonds, usually offer fat interest payments to compensate investors for the risk that the companies will default.

Not now. In response to previous Fed stimulus plans, investors have poured money into these bonds, driving prices up and yields, which move in the opposite direction, down to 6 percent, the lowest on record. In the boom years before the recession, the lowest yield was more than two points higher.

"We have a high-yield bond market without yield, and the Fed's fingerprints are on this," says James Grant, editor of the newsletter Grant's Interest Rate Observer. "If debt prices turn out grossly overvalued, won't it owe an explanation for people who lost money?"

Earlier this month, the Fed chairman said the central bank would spend $40 billion each month buying mortgage bonds until the economy strengthens, and maybe even after. In its two previous programs, called quantitative easing, the Fed bought $2 trillion worth of Treasury and mortgage bonds.

The idea is to frustrate holders of conservative assets, like Treasurys, so they'll have no choice but to shift money into riskier fare. As they do, prices will rise, making people richer and willing to spend more money. And that, at least in theory, will speed economic growth.

Some critics argue the Fed has failed, noting that the U.S. economy grew at just 1.7 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter. But you can't deny it's been successful at least in part: People have moved money into riskier assets, and prices have jumped.

Since the Federal Reserve launched its first bond-buying program in November 2008, high-yield bonds have gained 68 percent, or 14.5 percent annually, 1.5 times their typical return, according to Martin Fridson of FridsonVision, a high-yield research firm. Meanwhile, the Standard & Poor's 500 index, in price alone, has gained 85 percent.

In 2012, the S&P 500 has risen 16 percent, almost all of it since June in anticipation of the Fed's new stimulus.

It's possible stocks will continue to climb. The S&P 500 is trading at 14 times its expected per-share earnings for the next 12 months, which doesn't appear expensive. This earnings multiple was lower ? meaning stocks were cheaper ? at the start of the first Fed stimulus, in November 2008, but only slightly: It was 12.9, according to S&P Capital IQ, a research firm. At the start of the Fed's second round of bond-buying, in November 2010, the S&P traded at 14 times, the same as today.

But stocks seemed just as expensive then as they do now because expectations for earnings then were low. Since the recovery began, Wall Street analysts have mostly been scrambling to raise their expectations, not cutting them, as they are now. They were surprised how much companies were able to sell abroad, slash expenses and get more work out of smaller staffs.

Last year, companies in the S&P 500 squeezed a record $8.80 in profit out of every $100 in sales, up from $5.90 after the first Fed program, according to Goldman Sachs. But now these profit margins are falling for the first time in the recovery, and revenue growth is dropping as Europe slips into recession and many developing countries slow.

And the bad news keeps coming. On Tuesday, FedEx, considered a bellwether because its shipping operations span the globe, said that trading volumes had slowed to recession levels. On Thursday, railroad giant Norfolk Southern dropped 9 percent after reporting a steep fall in shipments.

If the economy continues to slow, or falls into a recession, investors in high-yield bonds will get hurt, too. They appear to be reassured by the low number of bonds defaulting now, about 3 percent. But defaults could rise fast. In 2008, defaults peaked at 13 percent, clobbering investors in high-yield. Investors in mutual funds holding so-called junk lost 26 percent that year, according to Morningstar, a fund tracker.

"If you need income, you don't have much choice but to go to riskier assets," says Fridson, the junk bond expert. But he adds, "If the country falls back into recession, people will face losses."

Should junk tumble, Grant, the newsletter editor, quips that Bernanke should consider a "handwritten apology" to investors or possibly a spoken one on "60 Minutes." But he holds out the possibility prices will continue to rise, noting that the Fed's efforts to stimulate the economy, as well as similar bond-buying plans by central banks in Europe and Japan, are unprecedented.

"One can't be dogmatic about likely outcomes of an untried, worldwide experiment," Grant says. "We're all lab rats. Investors are lab rats."

Count George Cipolloni, former bull, among the worrywarts.

Last year, when other investors were selling stocks and junk because of fear the U.S. was about to fall into another recession, Cipolloni, co-manager of the Berwyn Income Fund, bought by the armload, just as he did in previous market dips. Since 2009, his fund has returned 117 percent.

But he's selling now, and piling up cash. It now accounts for 24 percent of the fund's holdings, up from 7 percent about a year ago.

"We're trying to be as risk-averse as possible," Cipolloni says. "We don't want to lose money."

Below,?Jim McCaughan, CEO of Principal Global Investors, and Peter Sorrentino, of Huntington Asset Advisors, discuss with CNBC whether the rally can carry into the fall.

Down and Dirty: Cornell Alum's Gritty New Novel | The Cornell Daily ...

This summer, Cornell alumnus Lisa Stasse released her debut novel The Forsaken. Based in a post-apocalyptic America, her novel is the story of Alenna Shawcross, a 17-year-old orphan who is (spoiler alert!) about to be punished for a crime she hasn?t committed ? yet. As punishment Alenna is sent to Prison Island Alpha, known by the people on it as ?The Wheel.? Faced with living on the criminal inhabited island, Alenna is forced to learn to adapt and survive. A new addition to the young adult fiction-science fiction family, The Forsaken follows in the footsteps of trendy of science fiction novels like The Hunger Games while still working to draw inspiration from genre classics like Lord of the Flies and Brave New World.

Lisa was a Government and English Literature double major at Cornell. She is currently a digital librarian at UCLA by day and a young adult author by night. This summer we got the chance to sit down with Lisa and talk about her new book.

Sun: How did you come up with the idea for The Forsaken?

Lisa: I had this terrible nightmare, and my heart stopped. I woke up and I breathed a sigh of relief and thought to myself that was really cool. I was on an island and it was some kind of prison colony. I didn?t really know why I was there or what was going on. I saw debris. I thought: that?s so cool; I wonder what I could do with that idea.?

Sun: What was your inspiration for your main character, Alenna?

Lisa: One of my favorite root stories is Heart of Darkness, I really liked the show Lost, I like the idea of putting characters in the modern world into a wilderness setting. Some of the more modern stuff too like The?Hunger Games and The Maze Runner and Divergent, all of them deal with aspects of that. Young people in hostile environments.

Sun: Do you think The Forsaken will reach the popularity of books like The Hunger Games?

Lisa: I?m hoping to be in the ranks of The?Hunger Games, but at the same time I would like to think of The Forsaken as being a little grittier. I think of it as more of an alternate reality. Not projected on a fixed time. The book is down and gritty, I thought about what I would do if I were put in that situation and I know if I wanted to survive I want to get down in the dirt myself.? In some ways it is like The Hunger Games, but at the same time I think The Forsaken has its own qualities.

Sun: Why did you choose to write about teenage characters?

Lisa: I was always interested in teens, in that sense of self-definition that happens at that age. I really wanted to work with a character that I thought something like this could affect her entire life. Alenna saw lack of opportunity and bleak conditions around her and this only gets exacerbated at prison island Alpha.

Sun: It seems like an area people are getting really excited about.

Lisa: Yeah, I really like young adult fiction. For the past 10 years, young adult fiction has been one of the most vibrant areas of literature. People are really passionate about it. A lot of energy and new types of stories are coming out of that genre right now that aren?t coming out of adult fiction. There?s sort of an energy and nexus in the young adult world right now.

Sun: In your book, is there a character that you relate to most?

Lisa: It?s hard to write any character without seeing part of yourself in that character. What I like most about Alenna is that she really rises to the challenge. She didn?t realize she had so much strength until she was put in that situation.

Sun: The title of the second book of the trilogy is The Uprising, without giving too much away, what can we expect from the next installment in the trilogy??

Lisa: There will be a few new characters, and some old characters will rejoin the cast and work together to define their future and create a new life for themselves. I can say that each book in the trilogy will be on larger scale than the one before. Sometimes when I?m writing the characters surprise me.

Sun: If you could have your readers take one thing away from the book, what would it be?

Lisa: The main thing I would say is you can do more than you think you can do. You always have more options than you realize, so take action and take risks.

Boeing and IFTC Partner to Enhance Flight ... - Business Review USA

ANTALYA, Turkey, Sept. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Boeing (NYSE: BA) announces the addition of a new "green" flight training center to the Boeing Flight Services training network. The facility, developed by International Flight Training Center (IFTC), opened today in Antalya in the southwestern region of Turkey. It operates on solar power and incorporates several other environmentally progressive features, making it the first self-sustaining flight training center in the world.

The Antalya center builds on a partnership launched in December 2011 between Boeing and IFTC at IFTC's existing training facility in Istanbul. The partnership expands training capabilities in the region and provides a competitive advantage for airlines seeking to train and qualify new personnel in expanding aviation markets.

The 2012 Boeing Pilot & Technician Outlook forecasts a need for more than 100,000 new commercial airline pilots in Europe over the next 20 years. Globally, the demand is for nearly a half-million pilots. ?

"Boeing is working to develop innovative solutions for our customers as we face tremendous demand for commercial airline pilots," said Sherry Carbary, vice president, Boeing Flight Services. "In partnership with IFTC we're now able to supply capable and well-qualified personnel in facilities close to our customers. This new capability combines IFTC's expertise and operations with the Boeing Edge - our unparalleled airplane and training knowledge that combines with breakthrough technologies - in a truly remarkable, self-sustaining facility."

Boeing and IFTC currently offer training on two Next-Generation 737 and two A320 full-flight simulators and flat panel trainers in a state of the art facility located in the Ataturk Airport free trade zone.

The Antalya site will operate as a satellite facility of the Istanbul training campus and features a Next-Generation 737 full-flight simulator. Antalya-based SunExpress is the initial airline training customer for the new facility.

"Our vision is to offer the highest quality and most cost efficient training with the utmost of customer friendly service, while at the same time operating a completely sustainable simulator center," said Marty van Veluw, CEO of IFTC. "We're excited to share this vision with Boeing and to lead the industry with this first of its kind 'green' training center, developed in Turkey by IFTC and our partners."

The "green" features at the Antalya facility include modular construction, solar power to run the simulators and water cooling systems. In addition, employees and customers will be transported to the facility in solar charged electric cars. The facility plans a small community of self- sustaining "green" houses for student lodging. Additional modular buildings are planned for the coming year to house simulators as well as a cabin safety training facility.
