Antiques on the Square ? Meet Your Merchant | Geauga News

If you?re one of those fortunate families with a fireplace, I imagine you have already stoked it up several times this fall. And if you?re a freezebaby like I am, you have probably moved that cushy chair and footstool a little closer so your feet can take their prominent place in this scenario! But what if your old 1970s cushy chair is looking its age, and the old oak footstool has been taken over by your cat or dog? How can you ever replace such well-loved family fixtures? By visiting Antiques on the Square in Chardon!

Antiques on the SquarePat Martin has been involved in the antique world for over 30 years and has confirmed her place as an established and well-loved business by receiving the #1 Antique Shop Award by the FOX 8 Cleveland ENGER HOT LIST four years in a row. With three floors brimming with relics and reminders of past decades and centuries, including some very handsome footstools, it is the perfect place to mosey away a Sunday afternoon ? or any other afternoon, for that matter. A visit to a quality antique shop does far more than while away an afternoon though. They have a way of bringing us back in touch with people, events, and emotions that have contributed to who we are today. As English author Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) states:

?I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don?t have complete emotions about the present, only about the past.?

For many, birthdays, anniversaries, and the holidays serve such a purpose. It?s a time when we remember those who are important to us with gifts that express gratitude, appreciation, and memories. Antiques on the Square offers many hundreds of such items for you to browse through.

Antiques on the Square

?Many of our dealers have been here since the shop?s inception in 1985,? shares Pat. ?They bring a wealth of experience to our valued customers.?

One of my favorite memories about Christmas as a child is when I received any of the little Steiff animals. They were top-of-the-line and, in my imaginary world, as real as unreal could possibly get. To this day, when I see a Steiff, those same feelings are stirred. If you?re one of those nostalgic people, then you?re in luck!

?Several of our dealers have expertise in specific areas such as clock repair, Steiff, and antique dolls,? says Pat.

Are you an HO Railroad collector? Perhaps you?re looking to replicate the 1950s with some chrome and formica table and chairs? Maybe you?re creating a scrapbook and need some unusual artwork. Check out one of their paper rooms downstairs, and sift through box after box of interesting history and art in the form of postcards.

Antiques on the Square didn?t become the #1 antique shop in Northeast Ohio four years in a row without good reason. It?s an unending 6,000 square foot museum of memories and quality goods offering all kinds of collections and individual pieces of furniture, art, clothing, clocks, jewelry, dolls, toys, etc. in their restored 1868 building. Put it on your list of places to explore this fall. I bet it becomes a regular on your calendar after just one visit!

No. 2 Cornell Survives Scare from Yale, 3-2 - Yale Bulldogs

Leonoff Stops 39

ITHACA, N.Y. ? The Yale women's ice hockey team came up just short in its bid for a major upset Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink, as a power-play goal in the third period gave No. 2 Cornell a 3-2 win over the Bulldogs. Sophomore goaltender Jaimie Leonoff took the hard-luck loss in goal, making 39 saves. Freshman forward Jamie Haddad and freshman defenseman Kate Martini scored for Yale.

Haddad's unassisted goal at 4:50 of the first came on a power play, just five seconds after a tripping call on Cornell and following a faceoff win by Cornell in the Big Red zone. Leonoff made 14 saves that period, and Yale's lead remained intact until early in the second.

Cornell (4-1-0, 2-0-0 ECAC Hockey) struck quickly to take a 2-1 lead early in the second with goals just 19 seconds apart from forwards Brianne Jenner and Jessica Campbell. But a 5-on-3 enabled the Bulldogs to tie the game midway through the period, as Martini scored her first collegiate goal on a one-timer off assists by junior defenseman Tara Tomimoto and freshman forward Janelle Ferrara. That capped a four-point weekend for Martini, who had three assists in Yale's 3-0 win at Colgate Friday.

Yale (1-3-0, 1-1-0 ECAC Hockey) stayed out of the penalty box until the 19:27 mark of the second period. While the Bulldogs were able to kill off that first penalty -- extending their streak of successful penalty kills to eight -- Cornell broke through after a tripping call early in the third. Forward Jillian Saulnier's tally at 4:36 proved to be the game-winner, as Cornell goalie Lauren Slebodnick finished with eight saves for the win.

Yale returns home for its first game of 2012-13 at Ingalls Rink next weekend, hosting Dartmouth Friday night.

(AP) ? For Kuwait's embattled rulers, clashes earlier this week with anti-government protesters were more than just a sign tensions may be mounting. The crowds themselves showed the widening nature of the Gulf nation's political crisis: Stirrings of a rare alliance of convenience between liberals and Islamists against Kuwait's Western-backed leadership.

While it's not the first time Middle East protests have brought together political foes ? Cairo's Tahrir Square last year and Iran's postelection unrest in 2009 had a full spectrum of voices ? Kuwait's tiny size means that the coalescence of such varied groups could make for an opposition that punches far above its own weight.

Despite the rising unrest, the ruling family appears in no imminent danger of an Arab Spring-style revolt such as Bahrain's 20-month-old Shiite Muslim-led uprising against the Sunni monarchy.

But the emerging alliance underscores the complicated challenges for Kuwait's ruling family as the oil-rich country moves toward Dec. 1 parliamentary elections.

Simultaneous pressure from liberals and Islamist conservatives could push Kuwait deeper into a political morass that has already disrupted the economy and raised questions about stability in one of Washington's most critical military footholds in the region.

Kuwait's importance to the Pentagon rose sharply after the U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq in December. It is now the hub for American ground forces in the Gulf, where the U.S. and its Arab allies seek to counter Iran's military buildup.

"This is certainly not a revolution. It is a call for change and serious reform," said Shafeeq Ghabra, political affairs professor at Kuwait University. "There is an overlapping interest in Kuwait's many political factions despite their differences. They want balance of power in the political game."

Islamists and their allies want power. They are pressing hard to reclaim their hold on the country's legislature, which is the most politically empowered among the Gulf Arab states.

Meanwhile, liberals are rallying around claims the rulers are overreaching. Many have strongly objected to the government's hard-ball political efforts over the past months that included disbanding the opposition-controlled parliament.

This has become the meeting point for the unusual joint onslaught ? that could become the most broad-based challenge to Kuwait's leadership since it was restored by the 1991 U.S.-led invasion that drove out Saddam Hussein's forces.

"Today we unite together in fighting a bigger entity. The autocracy in Kuwait is stopping true democratic life. We must fight autocracy first," said Lama al-Othman, a human rights activist and liberal columnist for Aljarida newspaper.

"As a liberal, my fight with the Islamist opposition is always ongoing," she continued. "I refuse repression, I refuse it when it's practiced by the opposition and I also refuse it when it's practiced by the government."

At last Sunday's protest rally, which drew thousands of people, fully veiled women marched alongside others wearing jeans and their hair in ponytails. Men in the traditional white robes of the Gulf chanted with college-age students in t-shirts.

Riot police used tear gas and stun grenades against protesters who defied orders to limit the rally to a site in front of the parliament building. Dozens were reported injured or overcome by the gas clouds.

Kuwait's government later ordered a ban on any public gatherings of more than 20 people, while loyalist groups issued a statement pledging support for the 83-year-old emir, Sheik Sabah Al Ahmad Al Sabah, who has ruled since 2006.

The monarchy still has wide public support and many ? even those currently siding with Islamists ? would likely favor the ruling system if any serious attempts were made by Islamic conservatives to impose strict social rules such as curfews on women and sex-segregated universities.

The country's emir controls the government payouts and generous cradle-to-grave benefits that are linchpins of the nation's social pact. But Kuwait's rulers are also grappling with the most politically charged landscape among Gulf Arab nations.

Parliament has wide powers and opposition lawmakers often make public charges of corruption against Cabinet members, who are mostly hand-picked by the emir. Here, political battles standout in comparison with the country's Gulf partners such as Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, where public dissent is rare and is quickly muzzled.

The current upheavals began in February elections, when Islamists and backers from sympathetic tribes took control of the 50-seat parliament. They quickly demanded key posts in the Cabinet and debated possible laws such as banning construction of new churches and mandating a death sentence for anyone convicted of blasphemy against the Prophet Muhammad.

The emir later disbanded the opposition-led parliament and unsuccessfully tried to challenge voting district changes that appeared to give anti-government forces an edge. For months, Kuwait was without a working parliament.

For the next election, however, the government has changed the electoral system from one permitting multiple ballots by each voter to a one-person-one-vote arrangement. Opposition groups claim this hurts them because they will not be able to form pre-election coalitions. They also say parliament should be the only venue to change voting rules.

Al-Othman, the rights activist, said the move pushed some liberals to join the Islamist-led protests.

"It's more important for me to fight a repressive government that refused to admit that the majority of the people have voted for Islamists," she said.

Fay al-Qassar, a 25-year-old political science graduate who favors liberal causes, said she was angered by the crackdowns on last week's protest marchers. "I realized we have to be more proactive if we want things to get better," she said.

Mohammed al-Dallal, a member of Kuwait's branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, claimed the Islamists do not seek to bring strict Muslim codes to Kuwait. But the now-disbanded parliament pushed for laws that demanded "modest" dress for women and sought to make Islamic law the exclusive source for all future legislation.

"Our battle against autocratic rule can take years, but we will go with it," he said.

Some liberal political leaders, meanwhile, believe anyone who broke ranks to join the Islamists will live to regret the choice.

"This is not a fight for liberty," said Bassam al-Asoussi, a member of Kuwait's liberal faction the Democratic Forum. "In any revolution, three things should be present: demands for equality, liberty and justice. The opposition today is against these very things."

Eman al-Bedah, another columnist for the Aljarida newspaper, said: "I don't think that they will clamp down the freedoms of the people. I know so. I am certain."

Romney on economy: Obama 'made the problem worse'

AMES, Iowa (AP) ? Seizing on fresh evidence of economic sluggishness, Republican challenger Mitt Romney said Friday that President Barack Obama inherited a bad situation when he took office and then "made the problem worse." Obama looked ahead to the second term he's hoping to win.

Referring to the two top Republicans in Congress, the president said he was prepared to "wash John Boehner's car" or "walk Mitch McConnell's dog" if it would help complete an elusive deal to cut future deficits by trillions of dollars.

The two campaign rivals faced a common danger as the end of their race came into view: a large and dangerous storm threatening to barrel up the East Coast. Romney and Vice President Joe Biden each canceled planned weekend appearances in Virginia Beach, Va.

Romney was unsparing in his criticism of the man he hopes to unseat. "Despite all that he inherited, President Obama did not repair our economy, he did not save Medicare and Social Security, he did not tame the spending and borrowing, he did not reach across the aisle to bring us together," the former Massachusetts governor said.

"Four years ago, America voted for a post-partisan president, but they have seen the most political of presidents, and a Washington in gridlock because of it," he added.

The Republican challenger borrowed a theme from Obama's successful 2008 campaign, saying he and running mate Paul Ryan "can bring real change to this country." And he tweaked a line that former President Bill Clinton unveiled at this summer's Democratic National Convention, saying, "This is not the time to double-down on trickle-down government policies that have failed us."

Democrats delighted in pointing out that Romney spoke outside Kinzler Construction Services, which benefitted from more than $650,000 in stimulus funding from the 2009 package Obama that signed into law ? and the Republican nominee often criticizes.

Romney campaigned in Iowa and Ohio as national polls showed a tight race. Though his aides claimed momentum, citing recent polls, Obama's team said the president led or was tied in each of the nine battleground states where the two sides have concentrated hundreds of millions of dollars in television commercials over the past five months.

Back in the White House after his long day and night and day of campaigning, Obama said he looked forward to trying to reach a deal with congressional Republicans on a sweeping budget deal if he wins re-election. Asked by radio show host Michael Smerconish if he would make the first move, the president replied, "I've said I'll do whatever's required to get this done.

"And I think the key that the American people want right now is for us to tackle some big challenges that we face in a commonsense, balanced, sensible way." That was a reference to one of his biggest differences with Romney ? his insistence that tax cuts be allowed to expire at upper incomes on Dec. 31, as opposed to Romney's insistence that they be extended.

Obama has been under pressure from Romney in recent days to be more specific about a second-term agenda, and he released a 20-page pamphlet earlier this week. He also had interviews with MTV and several battleground-state television stations on his schedule for the day.

Later, in a live interview with MTV, he urged younger voters to cast their ballots, saying, "there's no excuse" not to.

"In 2000, Gore versus Bush, 537 votes changed the direction of history in a profound way and the same thing could happen," he said. That was Bush's contested margin of victory in Florida, the state that decided the election in a race that went to the Supreme Court.

The two sides disagreed ? of course ? on whether the political battlefield was expanding.

First Romney, then Obama, launched a modest run of television ads in Minnesota, where neither side had made a significant effort to date. The Republican's aides claimed an opportunity to make a state competitive that had long been counted as safe for Obama. The president's side disputed that, insisting that its ads were aimed at voters in Wisconsin, the battleground next door.

Obama's strategists appeared concerned about the impact of Romney's persistent attacks on the president's position on Israel, airing a commercial in the West Palm Beach, Fla., area, home to a large number of Jewish voters. "As long as I'm president of the United States, Iran will not get a nuclear weapon," the president vows in the ad, addressing fears that Tehran would attempt to obliterate the Jewish state.

The ad's subject matter, foreign policy, was a rarity in a campaign for the White House focused largely on the economy and jobs.

Romney vows to put his experience as a businessman to use to create 12 million jobs in four years in a country where unemployment only recently fell below 8 percent for the first time since Obama took office. The president claims progress during his term on fixing the economy, though conceding it hasn't been fast enough, and says Romney's policies would only make matters worse.

There was little indication that the economy was gathering much momentum, based on a Commerce Department report during the day, which said growth from July through September was slightly faster than a 2 percent annual rate. Growth so far this year is slightly less than in 2011, which was weaker than 2010. Officials said the current annual rate is too slow to bring a rapid boost in job creation.

Not all economy-related soundings were negative.

A prominent measure of consumer confidence, calculated by the University of Michigan, rose to its highest level since September 2007, three months before the nation's economy cratered and the credit system virtually shut down.

Romney's aides billed his remarks as a speech about the economy although it was more political than that.

"Four years ago, candidate Obama spoke to the scale of the times. Today, he shrinks from it, trying instead to distract our attention from the biggest issues to the smallest, from characters on Sesame Street and silly word games to misdirected personal attacks he knows are false," he said.

Romney personalized his message at Friday's final campaign stop on frigid night in North Canton, Ohio: "How many single moms these days are scrimping and saving so they can put a good meal on the table at the end of the day for their kids?" Romney asked with Ryan at his side, later adding, "It's time to have a president and a vice president who care more about the people than care about politics."

The Republican's statement that it was no time to "double down on trickle down government policies" was eerily like Clinton's criticism at the Democratic convention. "We simply cannot afford to give the reins of government to someone who will double down on trickle down," the former president said, referring to policies he said Republicans had tried in the past with poor results.

The Romney campaign moved swiftly to try to lay one controversy to rest.

Former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu suggested in an interview on Thursday that retired Secretary of State Colin Powell had endorsed Obama because both are black. Sununu later issued a statement that said, "I do not doubt that it was based on anything but his support of the president's policies."

Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch

Cisco Linksys' WUMC710 AC Wi-Fi Universal Media Connector Bridge is Linksys' pre-draft 802.11ac companion bridge to the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router AC 1750HD Video Pro EA6500 its newly released pre-draft 802.11ac router. While the Linksys media bridge did not give any noticeable performance boosts in streaming media, such as I witnessed with Buffalo's AirStation AC1300/N450 4-Port Gigabit Dual Band Wireless Ethernet Bridge WLI-H4-D1300 , Linksys' unit is a bit less expensive at $159.99 than the $179.99 Buffalo bridge, is very easy to set up, and is a decent way to connect devices such as gaming consoles, NASes, or smart TVs, to your home network.

What's a media bridge useful for? Say you have a smart TV in your downstairs entertainment room and a wireless router in your upstairs home office. You want Internet access for your smart TV, but it doesn't have built-in wireless connectivity. You can place a media bridge near that TV, connect the bridge wirelessly to the router upstairs, and then connect the TV to the bridge via an Ethernet cable. This will put the TV on your home network and bring it Internet access.

Specs
The WUMC710 has four Gigabit Ethernet ports?as most media bridges. The front panel includes a WPS (WiFi Protected Setup) button (for push-button connectivity with a Linksys Smart Wi-Fi router) and LEDs for connectivity, power, and wireless status.
The media bridge wirelessly pairs with the EA6500, allowing you to take advantage of the wired 802.11ac throughput speeds within your local network with devices connected directly to the Ethernet ports of the bridge. The device ships with a CD containing documentation, a quick install guide, a cat 5e cable and a power adapter.

It's a 5 GHz bridge with three internal antennas that deliver a 3x3 transmit /receive speed. The WUMC710 supports the pre-draft 802.11ac standard and wireless 802.11A and N. Since it's 5GHz, it won't work with single-band 2.4 GHz routers, which is OK, because the wireless connectivity if for connecting the bridge to the 5GHz-supported EA6500 router, not for connecting wireless clients. You can still connect wireless clients to the EA6500's 2.4 GHz band.

Setup
To set up and pair the Linksys bridge with the Linksys EA6500 router, it's best to initially place the media bridge near the router, (it can be moved later?Linksys recommends the device operates about five meters from the router).

Then, connect the power adapter and wait for the power LED to stop flashing?this took about 30 seconds in my testing.

Next, press the WPS button on the media connector and within 2 minutes, press the WPS button on the EA6500 router. When I did this in testing, the WPS button started to flash on the bridge and the illuminated Cisco logo on the EA6500 began slowly blinking?these flashing lights indicated that WPS pairing had commenced. After a few seconds the bride's WPS and wireless LEDs became a solid blue color?the pairing of the router and bridge had been made.

Testing
For testing, I connected a server to the bridge. I checked the server's network settings and was pleased to discover the server was part of the Linksys' EA6500 router's network via its Ethernet connection to the WUMC710.? I also checked the EA6500's Connected Devices list in the router's interface and saw the name of the server. My server also received Internet access through the bridge's connection.

One small issue to consider: If you make any wireless settings changes to the EA6500 router, you will have to pair the bridge and router again. I changed the network settings on the EA6500 by renaming the SSID for the 5GHz band. My server immediately lost connectivity on the network. The fix was easy enough: I just re-pressed the WPS button on the media bridge and then the router, which fixed the problem bringing my server was back online.

To test performance, I connected a Synology DS712+
NAS to a LAN port on both the router and then the bridge. I then wirelessly uploaded a 1.5GB file to the NAS from a laptop. Connected to the bridge via Ethernet, my NAS showed negligible upload speed difference as compared with the NAS only connected to the router. Both upload times were about 2 minutes uploading from a laptop to the NAS, with the bridged connection a little faster at 1 minute and 42 seconds. I expected faster speeds with the bridge connection, since it uses 802.11ac.

You may not see any performance gains with the bridge, even running both bridge and router in pre-draft 802.11ac mode. Still, the WUMC710 is very easy to set up and does a good job of to extending network connectivity to devices that wouldn't otherwise have it. The Linksys WUMC710 Wireless-AC Wi-Fi 5GHz Universal Media Connector Bridge with 4-Port Switch earns 3.5 out of 5 stars for networking hardware.

Those in need welcome robot helpers in the house

1 hr.

Personal robotics companies are making a bet that real-world C-3P0-like machines will be of great help to the world?s aging population who need assistance with routine household tasks. The question is: will they embrace the technology?

Yes, as long as the robots do chores such as wash dishes, do laundry, and take out the trash, according to a new study from the Georgia Institute of Technology. But when it comes to more personal tasks such as bathing, getting dressed and eating, there?s a strong preference for human help.

Human assistance is also preferred for social activities such as calling family and friends and entertaining guests.?

The survey included 29 adults aged 65 to 93 who were showed a video of a robot?s capabilities and then interviewed about their willingness for assistance with 48 household chores. All participants were healthy and independent at the time and nearly 75 percent said they used gadgets such as cell phones.

?There are many misconceptions about older adults having negative attitudes toward robots,? Cory Ann-Marr, who will present the results at the Human Factors Ergonomics Society this week, said in a news release.?

That perception was exploited earlier this year in a political attack ad against Jeffrey Brandes, who is in a battle for state Senate seat in Florida and sponsored a bill while in the Florida House of Representatives that would allow the ?operation of autonomous motor vehicles on public roads? in Florida.

The ad featured an elderly woman?s voice questioning whether driverless car technology is ?really a priority for our state? and includes a sound clip from Brandes saying that he had to ?convince the senate it wasn?t witchcraft.?

Georgia Tech?s survey suggests there?s nuance to when a robot?s help is wanted. It appears to center of the level of physical or intellectual intimacy. For example, the study participants would accept a robot reminder to take their medicine, but want a human to help them decide which pill to take.

In other words, they are happy for the robot to be a sophisticated calendar, but there?s a lack of trust that the artificial intelligence is capable of choosing the correct medication.?

Likewise, these adults are wary of trusting a robot with physically intimate tasks such as taking a bath and getting dressed.?

?The people we interviewed were very enthusiastic and optimistic about robots in their daily lives,? Marr said. ?They were also very particular in their preferences, something that can assist researchers as they determine what to design and introduce in the home.?

Presumably, they won't be in the market for robots that offer?"mind-blowing sex."
