A Pair of Old G4 Towers Find a New Life as a Lovely Coffee Table [Furnitures]

At one time in their lives these G4 towers were Apple's flagship workstations—possibly cutting hundreds of hours of footage, or editing thousands of photos. But today they're barely useful as paperweights, and probably best suited as a pair of stylish supports for this Crunching Numbers coffee table. More »

Cutting back on sleep for school work is counterproductive

The old aphorism that "you snooze, you lose" doesn't apply to students who stay up late to cram for a test or finish a class project. New research shows that sacrificing sleep for school work is a bad trade.

Researchers from UCLA's Jane and Terry Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior enlisted students from three Los Angeles high schools to help them figure out whether academic performance suffered the day after a late night of studying.

It turned out their hunch was correct: Lost sleep resulted in less comprehension during class and worse performance on tests, according to their report, published online Tuesday in the journal Child Development.

"Sacrificing sleep for studying seems to be counterproductive," said Andrew J. Fuligni, a developmental psychologist at UCLA and the study's senior author.

The researchers gave 535 teenagers checklists to keep track of their sleep and study time for three 14-day periods when they were in ninth, 10th and 12th grades.

The UCLA team found that regardless of how much time a high schooler normally spends on homework each day, a student who gives up sleep for extra study time will have trouble the next day understanding material in class and be more likely to struggle with an assignment or test ? the opposite of the student's intent.

The researchers didn't quantify the increased risk for academic problems following a longer-than-usual study session, but they said the number of problems was "surprisingly greater."

The relationship held up no matter how academically ambitious the student was, as measured by the amount of time spent studying on a typical day, and it became stronger as students progressed through high school.

The results rang true to Kai Daniels, a college-bound senior at the Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies, a Mid-City magnet school. On occasions when she's stayed up late to study, she's had more trouble absorbing material in class, she said.

"I'd have to re-teach myself at night," she said.

The finding "makes a lot of sense," said Mona el-Sheikh, a professor of human development and family studies at Auburn University whose research includes sleep. Several new studies are showing that the quantity and the quality of sleep are important for remembering new information and consolidating learning, she said.

Students who get too little sleep don't have enough time to process what they study, she added; even just one night of sleep deprivation can have a negative effect. Parents should do what they can to make sure their children have sufficient and consistent sleep, she said.

Fuligni said he could not disclose which schools took part in the research. The students varied in ethnic and economic backgrounds, as well as in their level of academic achievement. Their checklists revealed that study time did not change over the course of high school ? the average was just over an hour per day ? but sleep time decreased by an average of 41.4 minutes.

He said the research didn't delve into why things got worse over time. But as the parent of a teenager, he offered several theories: Perhaps it's because the work grows more challenging, or that the teenagers are biologically driven to stay up later but still have to rise early because of school start times. They also may have developed other interests, including jobs.

Most adolescents need just over nine hours of sleep a night, which 9% of high school students actually get, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Though a consistent study and sleep schedule are ideal, the demands that high school students face make that "infeasible," the researchers wrote.

Fuligni suggested that students do their best to compensate by distributing study time evenly over the week. When extra time is needed, they should consider cutting back on an activity other than sleep. Fuligni's previous research showed as many as four extra hours were available from time spent socializing, watching TV and helping the family.

The Humane Society of the United States Recommends Pets Avoid Contact with West Nile Virus Pesticides

By: Humane Society of the United States

Aug. 21, 2012 - While many states struggle to combat the recent outbreak of West Nile virus, The Humane Society of the United States wants to reassure pet owners that the virus itself does not appear to pose a direct threat to the majority of pets. However, it is recommended that they protect pets from contact with the pesticides being sprayed to kill mosquitoes carrying the virus.

"When it comes to your pet's health, it's better to be safe than sorry," advises Dr. Barbara Hodges, DVM, MBA and Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association consultant. "Pet owners should maintain an ongoing dialogue with their veterinarians about the prevalence and prevention of insect-borne diseases, the selection and proper use of over the counter insect repellants and prescription medications, and the potential health effects and treatment of pesticide exposures for their companion animals."

It is also important to be aware that pesticides "summate," meaning total exposure is the sum of all pesticides applied to the pet as well as to the pet's environment. It is recommended that your pet avoid or minimize any exposure from aerial spraying, flea spray or premise spray being applied at home.

The latest available research shows that even though household pets like cats and dogs can become infected with the West Nile virus, they are unlikely to experience any adverse symptoms or reactions to it. It also appears there is little to no risk that a pet could transmit the virus to humans. Nevertheless The HSUS asks pet owners to take extra precautions to keep their pets safe from the aerial spraying.

The virus can cause serious illness or even death in horses and other equid species, so these animals should be properly vaccinated. There is no West Nile virus vaccine for dogs or cats nor would there be an indication to develop one. It is recommended that horses and other livestock be confined in covered barns and stables during pesticide spraying.

To protect your pets from the West Nile virus pesticides:

- Be sure pets are safely indoors out of harm's way during spraying. Close all windows and doors and turn off air conditioning units as an extra safety precaution.
- Carefully clean water and food bowls, toys, and other pet items that may have been left outdoors and exposed to pesticides.
- Carefully rinse your pets' paws and other body surfaces after possible contact with pesticide residue remaining on sidewalks or lawns after spraying has concluded. Cats in particular may ingest pesticide residues on their coats by self-grooming.
- Take special precautions to ensure that puppies, kittens, elderly pets and pets with compromised immune systems are not inadvertently exposed to pesticides.
- Cover all fish ponds to prevent pesticides from entering the pond water.
- Reduce your pets' risk of contracting any mosquito-borne disease by minimizing their overall exposure to mosquitoes. Discuss appropriate pet mosquito repellants with your veterinarian.
- Heartworm disease is another mosquito-borne threat to dogs and cats; talk with your veterinarian about heartworm disease prevention options.

Although pesticide poisoning is unlikely, warning signs can include fever, vomiting, lethargy and neurological signs such as loss of balance or motor skills. If you believe that your pet has ingested pesticides or has been overly exposed to them, consult your veterinarian.

Obama: Romney not ?responsible? for death of woman in political ad

President Barack Obama speaks in the Briefing Room of the White House in Washington August 20, 2012. (Kevin La??

President Barack Obama on Monday effectively repudiated a controversial and misleading ad, crafted by a super PAC fighting for his re-election, that essentially blamed Mitt Romney for the cancer death of the wife of a laid-off steelworker. The White House had previously resisted calls to denounce the commercial, which has run only once as a paid ad but has seized headlines and aired on news programs since its release.

"I don't think that Gov. Romney is somehow responsible for the death of the woman that was portrayed in that ad," Obama told reporters during a surprise visit to the White House briefing room.

"But keep in mind this was an ad that I did not approve, I did not produce and as far as I can tell has barely run. I think it ran once," the president said. And he accused Romney of personally embracing "patently false" attacks on his record on welfare.

Obama also defended himself from charges?notably from Romney?that he is running a negative campaign.

"If you look at the overall trajectory of our campaign, and the ads that I've approved, and are produced by my campaign, you'll see that we point out sharp differences ? but we don't go out of bounds," he said.

Obama bristled at the reporter's question, which noted that his campaign has suggested that Romney either lied to the public or committed a felony with his handling of Bain Capital.

"Nobody accused Mr. Romney of being a felon," he said.

But deputy Obama campaign manager Stephanie Cutter said on a July 12 conference call with reporters that Romney either misrepresented the timing of his departure from Bain to the Securities and Exchange Commission, "which is a felony," or was "lying to the American people" about when he left the firm.

"After spending weeks refusing to denounce his super PAC's scurrilous ad against Mitt Romney, President Obama once again failed to lead," said Romney campaign spokesman Ryan Williams.

"President Obama's failure to stand up to dishonest rhetoric and attacks demonstrates yet again he's diminished the office that he holds and his record is nothing more than business as usual in Washington," Williams said.

SF real estate scammer sentenced to five years in prison | Mike ...

Keith Wilson, the once respected advocate for San Francisco's Richmond district who conned community members out of hundreds of thousands of dollars through a real estate investment scam, was formally sentenced Monday to five years in state prison.

Wilson, 56, ?thought he could use people?s hard-earned money as his personal piggy bank and get away with it,? District Attorney George Gasc?n said Monday.

Wilson defrauded seven victims of more than $347,000, prosecutors said. He formed two corporations, Tribecca and Lone Cedar, and persuaded the victims to buy shares in his company. The victims believed their money was being used to purchase, renovate and resell homes for a profit. Instead, Wilson pocketed the money, Gasc?n said.

?Much of the money was spent on shopping sprees, political contributions and expensive restaurants,? the district attorney said.

3 sacks give Redskins' RGIII a taste of pressure

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Robert Griffin III: three sacks, no touchdowns.

Kirk Cousins: three touchdowns, no sacks.

If preseason stats could be taken at face value, one could have fun cobbling together yet another Washington Redskins quarterback controversy, this one involving a pair of rookies.

For one thing, fourth-rounder Cousins from Michigan State is naturally more comfortable in the pocket than No. 2 overall pick Griffin, who didn't get a chance to learn the nuances of a pro-style offense at Baylor.

Of course, there is no such QB competition. Griffin played with and against starters during the first half of Saturday night's 33-31 loss to the Chicago Bears, while Cousins was on the field in the second half with quite a few players who will soon be looking for work. Griffin would have to be inept or injured not to remain the No. 1 guy when the regular season opens, and so far he's been neither.

But he did get his first taste of NFL pressure after a relatively smooth quarter of work in the preseason opener the week before. He lost a fumble deep in Redskins territory on one of the sacks and completed 5 of 8 passes for only 49 yards.

"We never really got into a rhythm," Griffin said. "I think everyone on the (first-string) wanted to go back in the second half."

Growing pains aside, Griffin can't flourish if he's always on the run. The game reinforced an ongoing concern about an offensive line that was missing three projected starters ? Kory Lichtensteiger, Chris Chester and Jammal Brown.

The Redskins (No. 25 in the AP Pro32) are reasonably hopeful that Lichtensteiger and Chester will be healthy when the regular season starts Sept. 9.

And Griffin is also going to need more help from the starting defense, which gave up big plays and lost two starters ? two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Brian Orakpo and strong safety Brandon Meriweather ? to injuries in the first quarter.

Orakpo and Meriweather were both scheduled for MRIs on Sunday, with coach Mike Shanahan expected to divulge the results when the team reconvenes for practice on Monday.

Orakpo reinjured his left shoulder trying to tackle Bears receiver Devin Hester; it's the same shoulder that required surgery after the linebacker tore a pectoral muscle in the final game of last season.

Meriweather, a significant offseason free agent signing, hurt his left knee when a player fell on him during a touchdown run by Michael Bush.

In addition, linebacker London Fletcher added more intrigue to his recent spate of missed practice work by sitting out the game. Shanahan said Fletcher was "not feeling right" and declined to give any more details.

The Redskins can't afford to lose any of those players for long ? because the defense is expected to keep games competitive while Griffin deals with the inevitable ups and downs of his rookie season.

Not that Griffin appeared rattled by his uneven night. Shanahan's best compliment about the rookie's performance had nothing to do with a particular throw.

"I liked the way he handled himself," the coach said. "He is very poised. He is cool, calm, collected. He never seems to lose his composure."

About to take the field with the Redskins trailing 20-10 at halftime, Cousins said he told his fellow second-teamers: "Let's go down swinging." He went on to complete 18 of 23 passes for 264 yards and a 154.1 rating, leading a comeback that actually made the waning minutes of the fourth quarter somewhat interesting.

While he's no threat to overtake Griffin anytime soon, Cousins could make a strong challenge to Rex Grossman for the No. 2 job.

"There were a lot of plays that I liked, and a lot of where I'm still learning and needing to grow and get better from," Cousins said. "There were some rookie mistakes, but a good preseason game and a lot to build off of."
