Obama: Romney has no 'single new idea'

US President Barack Obama accused Republican foe Mitt Romney on Sunday of failing to offer "a single new idea" and being a relic of the last century as he revved up a pre-convention tour.

Rattling through battleground states en route to the Democratic National Convention this week in Charlotte, North Carolina, Obama also rebuked Romney for ignoring the Afghan war during his own nominating speech.

"It was something to behold," Obama told a 13,000-strong crowd in Colorado, as he picked apart Romney's keynote address in Florida on Thursday night that marked the climax of a three-day Republican convention.

"Despite all the challenges we face in this new century, what they offered over those three days was an agenda that was better suited for the last century," Obama said.

"It was a rerun... we have seen it before -- you might as well have watched it on a black and white tv with some rabbit ears."

Democrats say that Romney, who used his convention to try to tell his personal story and improve his likeability ratings, may have given Obama an opening by offering only sketchy policy stands.

They are also framing Obama as a candidate of the future, with his slogan "Forward," and to position the older Romney -- he is aged 65 while Obama is 51 -- as a contender from a bygone era.

Obama said that Romney, with whom he is neck and neck in the polls ahead of the November election, had refused to reveal the "secret sauce" that would help him create jobs: "he did not offer a single new idea."

"It was retreads of the same old policies we have been hearing for decades, the same politics that have been sticking it to the middle class for years," the president added.

He also ripped Romney for having "nothing to say" in his speech in Florida about the Afghan war, which the president has promised to end "responsibly" in the same way that he brought troops home from Iraq.

"We are bringing our troops home from Afghanistan. And I set a timetable -- we will have them out of there by 2014. Governor Romney doesn't have a timetable. I think he is wrong."

Romney has criticized setting a withdrawal date for US forces, saying doing so would aid US enemies.

But he has also suggested that the "right timetable" for a withdrawal is by the end of 2014 -- a date already set by NATO.

The Romney campaign meanwhile pounced on a slip by Obama supporter and Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley, who was asked whether Americans were better off now than four years ago.

"No, but that's not the question of this election," O'Malley told CBS show "Face the Nation," blaming former Republican president George W. Bush for lingering agony in the US economy.

"We are not as well off as we were before George Bush brought us the Bush job losses, the Bush recession, the Bush deficits, the series of desert wars charged for the first time to... a national credit card."

Romney was quick to exploit the comment, which offered support for the central conceit of his campaign that Obama, despite good intentions and soaring speeches, has done little to improve the economic lot of the middle class.

"This president can ask us to be patient. This president can tell us it was someone else's fault. This president can tell us that the next four years he'll get it right," the former Massachusetts governor said in a statement.

"But this president cannot tell us that YOU are better off today than when he took office. America has been patient.

"Americans have supported this president in good faith. But today, the time has come to turn the page."

Obama is on a four-day "Road to Charlotte" tour taking in territory that will decide November's election, in which his prospects are clouded by a painfully slow economic recovery and 8.3 percent unemployment.

He started in Iowa, the state that nurtured his unlikely 2008 presidential run and where he is now locked in a tight race with Romney.

After Colorado, the president heads to Ohio to celebrate the Labor Day holiday with working Americans on Monday.

Should Obama win Ohio, a perennial bellwether state and one where most polls show him with a narrow lead, he will be the hot favorite to win a second term in the White House.

No Republican has won the White House without having Ohio in his column.

Obama will travel to another swing state, Virginia, on Tuesday, before flying into Charlotte on Wednesday on the eve of his big convention address.

Romney, a former venture capitalist, used last week's Republican convention to urge voters to give him the chance to turn around the nation's fortunes.

He has trailed Obama for much of the race and still lags in swing states such as Florida, Ohio and Pennsylvania, but the Republican's campaign is well-financed and has raised tens of millions of dollars more than the president.

News and Society Blog-Energy: Clean Energy Technology - What Is ...

Defining Clean Energy

Clean energy is different energy sources that can be used naturally without causing harm to the environment. We have all heard about clean energy and we all know what fossil fuels are so I won't go in to to much detail. Currently we are burning fossil fuels such as oil and coal that are causing an extreme amount of damage to our environment and health. This has been argued by many but I don't see how we can deny these facts for any longer. Our most brilliant minds on the planet have not only made this extremely clear but it we can now see it with our own eyes and feel it with our own senses. If you go outside in any major city and pay attention to the air it is extremely clear that it is filled with smog and pollution. If you go for a walk or a jog and you are paying attention to the air your breathing and the vehicles that are driving by then this becomes self-evident. Clean energy is using alternatives that do not affect our air, food, water or anything else that has a negative impact on our environment.

The Different Types Of Clean Energy

Currently we have many different types of clean renewable energy. We have solar power, wind power, geo-thermal, wave power, magnet power and many more that are beginning to surface. Not only are these different types of energy becoming widely known but they are becoming more affordable and easy to implement. For example solar panels used to cost a lot of money. You had to pay a lot for the panels, pay someone to install them and pay a lot for the batteries. It's gotten to the point now where you can simply go online, find an eBook and learn how to do solar panels yourself for very affordable prices. You can simply put a small solar panel in your back yard or your balcony that will charge a battery and your appliances at the same time. You can do the same thing with wind power. Geo-thermal power is an alternative source of energy that uses a technique called heat mining. What this does is uses the water that is underground to generate mass amounts of clean energy. Wave power is are devices that are installed in our oceans that generate energy from the oceans movements. Magnet power harnesses the power of magnets to harvest clean renewable energy. It's important to note that all of these energies are clean, renewable and are very cost efficient and easy to maintain. If we were to utilize these energies we could do away with fossil fuels and power society forever.

How To Use These Energies

The use is simple. If we were to replace our coal factories with geothermal units and replace all other fossil fuels with solar, wind, wave and magnet power it would eliminate the energy crisis. The only problem is that the powers that be will not allow this. They are profiting and making way to much money off of fossil fuels. So what do we do? Simple. We start by taking personal responsibility and then start expanding to community projects. For example, start doing what you can to produce your own energy and then get together with a community or a movement of some sort and expand. If individuals started creating their own energy and then started getting together in communities it would fix the issues from the inside out and out compete the powers that be. In America the constitution allows free trade, community projects and the freedom to create what we desire. We do not need the "powers that be" to do this for us.

Protecting The Value Of Your Antique Furniture | The Board Magazine

by SYA on September 2, 2012

By Calvin E. Rodarte

When you have antique furniture in your home you have to be sure to take care of it properly. When you do not do this, you risk the opportunity of causing damage to the furniture and thereby reducing its value. Since antiques are typically family heirlooms or items that you possibly had to spend a large amount of money on you probably do not want any damage or loss of value to occur to them.

Modern furniture requires much less considerations than their antique counterparts. Modern furniture can often be placed anywhere but antiques need to be placed in a proper area. Of primary importance is unnecessary exposure to UV rays which can take place when antiques are placed in front of large windows in the direst path of the sun. Contact with direct sunlight will lead to deterioration of the finish, wood, and fabrics.

You should not put any antique furniture near air conditioning or heating vents because of the temperature changes that can quickly occur in these locations. When place your furniture in these types of areas the wood can shrink and the glue used to put it together can degrade which are both things that lead to furniture damage. Wood is also very susceptible to changes in moisture which can cause consecutive periods of swelling and shrinking that cause additional structural issues. Keeping consistent moisture level in your house with a humidifier and dehumidifier can effortlessly help you to avoid this issue.

Cleaning approaches are also extremely important when it comes to antiques because the way you do it can alter its value and condition. Outdated information told antique owners to oil their furniture as a way to ?feed? it moisture but this is an approach that we now know we shouldn?t take. Surface oil on furniture has a tendency to collect dust and also contributes to the deterioration of the wood. Moisture levels in your house are certainly the key to keeping your wood furniture from getting dried out but for individuals who enjoy the clear look of polish, a paste wax can be used. Waxing enables you to easily dust without being concerned about a grimy build up or damage.

Sometimes antique furniture starts looking ragged over the years and people are tempted to strip and refinish these items; however, you should think twice about doing this since it can removal historical value. When you need a piece of furniture restored it is ideal to get ahold of a specialist in this arena so that you do not lose value in your antique. Even though you may use your antiques as furniture they are still a valuable asset and they should be treated as such.

You may never know the complete details of this, but you can try to learn all you can by going to antique furniture and you can also visit English-Classics.net.

Founded in 1979 out of disgust at corporate environmentalism and "namby pamby" green action, EarthFirst!ers have famously gotten involved in green problems directly, usually breaking the law. Calling itself a priority, not an organization, the webpage explains: "Earth Initially! has survived attacks by moderates, would-be leaders plus the agents in the technique, remaining essentially the most diverse, passionate, committed, and uncompromising group of environmental activists. Our direct actions in defense in the last wild locations only appear radical in comparison with an whole paradigm of denial and manage, where the person is convinced they're powerless, plus the organizations set up to shield the wilderness continue to bargain it away." obat tradisional maag ma16

Armstrong, 82, passed away Aug. 25 due to complications resulting from cardiovascular surgery, which he underwent earlier this month.

In July 1969, Armstrong commanded Apollo 11, the first manned lunar landing mission. His first words upon setting foot on the moon were, "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."

Armstrong's family, together with invited guests including the first moonwalker's fellow astronauts and the leadership of NASA, gathered at the Camargo Club in Cincinnati for a private memorial service on Friday morning.

The family's service was strictly invitation-only and closed to the press. The guest list was not released, but among those in attendance were Armstrong's two Apollo 11 crew mates Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, as well as Apollo astronauts Bill Anders, Dick Gordon, Jim Lovell and Gene Cernan. Mercury astronaut and former Ohio Senator John Glenn also attended with his wife Annie.

Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) eulogized Armstrong, as did the astronaut's two sons Eric ("Rick") and Mark, and Piper Van Wagenen, one of Armstrong's 10 grandchildren.

"Today, we pay tribute to a pioneering American; an explorer, a patriot and an individual who, with 'one small step,' achieved an impossible dream. Family, friends and colleagues of Neil's gathered to reflect on his extraordinary life and career, and offer thanks for the many blessings he shared with us along the way," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden in a statement. "A grateful nation offers praise and salutes a humble servant who answered the call and dared to dream." [Neil Armstrong Memorial Service (Photos)]

U.S. Navy F/A-18 jets flew overhead in a "Missing Man" formation at the end of the service in honor of Armstrong's service as a naval aviator.

National remembrances

According to NASA, planning is underway for a national service to be held Sept. 12 in Washington, D.C., although no other details have been released.

In the meantime, two NASA centers held public tributes on Friday.

The U.S. Space & Rocket Center, the visitor center for NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., hosted a ceremony around its 363-foot tall Saturn V rocket display, launching red, white and blue balloons in memory of Armstrong. Present were astronauts Owen Garriott, Jan Davis and Fred Leslie.

The Kennedy Space Center in Florida also met around its moon rocket exhibit at the Apollo/Saturn V Center, where center director Robert Cabana led the remembrance.

Control of energy electricity and gas bills

This is one of the importances of comparing the market prices for your electricity and gas. As Facebook Stock Nears $18, Its Focus on Music Will Suffer

Facebook shares dove under $19 and were trading down 4.86% to $18.17 Friday afternoon after slashed price targets and fresh revenue concerns.

Citing "challenged" media spending and an inflow of additional shares from lock-up expirations, BMO Capital Markets cut its price target to $15 from $25 on Friday. BofA Merrill Lynch cut its price target to $23 from $35.

What this means for Billboard readers is music probably will not figure prominently, or even much, into the company's plans in the coming months and years. At $18.35, Facebook is less than half its initial offering price of $38 (which itself was too high and led to quite a fiasco for the company). It could drop further as previously locked up shares are sold on the public market. It could drop even further if the company fails to adequate ramp up its mobile product and performance.

Flash back to Facebook's annual f8 developer conference. Music was a focal point of the company's debut of Open Graph, Facebook's social fabric that Internet radio services, subscription services and ticketing companies can use to improve their own services. Spotify CEO Daniel Ek took the stage with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg -- the two met through Spotify investor Sean Parker -- to talk about the tight integration between the two products. After f8, one was left with the impression that music was an indelible part of Facebook's future.

But music's star has faded at Facebook because two things have happened since that f8 conference: the introduction of the Timeline format in December and the company's initial public stock offering in May.

Timeline has eroded the value of Facebook for musicians, turning a potential one-stop shop into just another place to visit. Witness BandPage, which went from building social apps specifically for Facebook to building tools that depend less on Facebook. Witness MTV, which just launched in public beta its Artist.MTV initiative that gives any artist a media-filled page at MTV.com with Topspin-powered ecommerce tools. If Facebook -- and MySpace -- won't be the de facto online home for musicians, MTV will give it a shot.

The company's initial public stock offering in May indirectly impacts the music business by diverting focus and resources. The further Facebook's stock falls, the more irate Facebook investors and analysts become, the greater the chances the company will experience changes in leadership, kill old projects and focus on a small set of fundamentals that do not include music. Improving its mobile platform and monetizing its growing mobile audience are at the top of the list.

Beyond music video, which continues to be popular at Facebook, music has had few recent successes and has failed to live up to expectations. Facebook Music, the tab that allows a user to see friends' music activity on various apps and services, has been a non-event. And no evidence has appeared the "listen" button installed on artist home pages has moved the needle. Expect more of the same as Facebook sorts out its larger problems.
